Every tour we run in Taichung8 tours

Grouped by how they are paid for, because that is how travellers actually sort them: free, private group, themed, self-guided. The free ones take a short online form and run for a single guest; the rest need a guide's or a kitchen's availability confirmed first.

Free, tips only

One guest is enough, groups stay under ten, and you book with a short form. Pay what you thought it was worth at the end — no set amount, no minimum.

About walking tours in Taichung with TC Time Walk

TC Time Walk is a local guide collective founded in Taichung's old town in 2015. We hold 4.9 stars on Google from 191 reviews and have hosted more than 10,000 travellers from Taiwan and abroad. Most of our tours stay in the Central and West Districts — Taichung Railway Station, Miyahara, the Fourth Credit Union, the Green River waterfront, the old Prefectural Hall, the Second Market, and the Japanese-era houses nobody lives in any more — and extend out to the Feng Chia night market in Xitun, the Litoudian old street in Nantun, and the neighbourhoods along the MRT Green Line from Beitun down to Wurih.

Every route is walked and written by the guide who leads it — nothing is outsourced and nobody reads from a script. We move on foot and by bike only, which makes the whole itinerary zero-carbon and maps cleanly onto SDGs 4, 11, 12 and 17; that is why school field trips and corporate ESG programmes keep coming to us. The free old-town walking tour and the Feng Chia night market food tour are tip-based, take a short online form, and run even for a single guest. Private groups go up to 200 people with insurance included, in Mandarin or English, from a meeting point of your choosing, and we can supply photos and certificates of participation afterwards.

Planning a day in Taichung? The combination that works most often: the old-town walking tour in the morning, lunch around the Second Market or the Fourth Credit Union, the AI treasure hunt or a cooking class in the afternoon, and the Feng Chia night market food tour after dark. All of it sits within reach of Taichung Station, the MRT and city buses, so you do not need a car. If you are travelling with children or older relatives, or your schedule is still loose, start with the self-guided treasure hunt.

Frequently asked questions

First time in Taichung — which tour should I pick?

Take the free old-town walking tour. It runs about two hours and covers the classic stretch — Taichung Station, Miyahara, the Fourth Credit Union and the Green River — it is tip-based, and it departs even for one guest. If you still have the evening free, add the Feng Chia night market food tour and you have a full day.

How many tours can I fit into one day in Taichung?

Two to three. A typical day is the old-town walking tour in the morning (2 hours), the AI treasure hunt or a cooking class in the afternoon (2–3 hours), and the night market food tour after dark (2 hours). Everything is within reach of Taichung Station, the MRT and city buses, so no car is needed — leave an hour in between for food and travel.

What is the difference between the free tours and the paid ones?

It comes down to whether a venue, materials or equipment are involved. The free old-town and night market tours are the guide's time only — tip-based, under ten people, on fixed departure slots. The paid programmes carry other costs: a cooking class pays the kitchen and the ingredients, the cycling tour needs bikes, the treasure hunt needs the app and its checkpoints maintained, and private groups include insurance and custom planning. Depth is not the difference — the same guides design all of it.

How far ahead should I book? Can I join on the day?

One to two days ahead for the free tours, about a week for the themed ones, and two weeks for private groups. Same-day requests are still processed, but we cannot promise a guide will be free — the form accepts your booking either way and we email you if it cannot go ahead.

What can I do in Taichung on a rainy day?

Take the cooking class: entirely indoors, about three hours, taught by migrant families from Southeast and South Asia who cook one dish from home with you. Walking tours still run in light rain — bring an umbrella — and in heavy rain or a weather warning we email you on the morning to reschedule.

How are school trips and corporate team-building quoted, and how many people can you take?

Up to 200 people, quoted by group size and route, with insurance included. The MRT Green Line walk has a published rate: from NT$6,000 for ten people, then NT$450 per extra person, with a local food tasting included. The old-town group tour is quoted to your brief — Mandarin or English, your meeting point and time — and we can supply photos and certificates of participation. Send the group enquiry form and we come back with a full quote.

Do you run tours in English? What about Japanese and Korean?

Yes, in English. The free old-town and night market tours are offered in Mandarin and English — just pick your language when you book. Japanese and Korean guided tours need to be arranged in advance and cannot be set up last-minute. If you would rather not depend on scheduling, the AI treasure hunt is built in Mandarin, English, Japanese and Korean and starts whenever you like.

Travelling with kids or older relatives — which tour works?

With children, choose the AI treasure hunt or the cooking class: the hunt lets you set your own pace and stop whenever you want, and the class is seated and indoors. With older relatives, choose the one-hour Litoudian mini walk on flat ground. The old-town walking tour is two hours and almost entirely on your feet; children aged six and up usually keep up fine.
